I wouldn’t want to be a European trying to deal with immigration. What makes the Old World old is that its countries are defined by ancient roots to the land, language, and DNA. We all have our images of what a Slav looks like, what a German looks like, an Italian, an Irish person. But imagine, in your mind’s eye, what an American looks like.
The driving force of the 20th century, nationalism, is incompatible with the needs of the 21st century, which include personal mobility and the transparency of borders.
It will be interesting to see how this develops.
